1inch vs Uniswap: Head-to-Head Comparison
1inch
$910M
24h volume
Uniswap
$2.51B
24h volume

While Uniswap dominates in raw volume, 1inch provides consistently better execution prices by aggregating liquidity across 400+ sources. As a DEX aggregator, 1inch doesn't compete with Uniswap directly -- it uses Uniswap as one of its many liquidity sources, alongside Curve, Balancer, SushiSwap, and hundreds of others.

The Fusion+ mode introduced in 2024 allows gasless swaps where users sign an order and professional market makers (resolvers) fill it, competing on price. This frequently results in better prices than going directly to any single DEX.

For traders swapping more than $1,000 in a single trade, aggregators like 1inch and Jupiter typically save 0.1-0.5% compared to using a single DEX, which can amount to significant savings over time.

Understanding Decentralized Exchanges

What is a DEX?

A decentralized exchange (DEX) is a peer-to-peer marketplace where cryptocurrency traders execute transactions directly through smart contracts, without depositing funds into an intermediary. Unlike centralized exchanges (CEXs) like Binance or Coinbase, DEXs provide full self-custody -- users trade directly from their wallets.

Types of DEXs

  • Automated Market Makers (AMMs) -- Use liquidity pools and mathematical formulas to determine prices. Examples: Uniswap (constant product), Curve (stableswap optimized for similar assets), Balancer (weighted pools).
  • Order Book DEXs -- Match buy and sell orders similar to traditional exchanges. Examples: dYdX, Hyperliquid. Better for derivatives and perpetual futures.
  • Aggregators -- Route trades across multiple DEXs to find the best price. Examples: 1inch, Jupiter (Solana). Recommended for large trades.
  • ve(3,3) DEXs -- Combine vote-escrowed tokenomics with AMM mechanics. Examples: Aerodrome (Base), Velodrome (Optimism). Incentivize deep liquidity through emissions directed by token holders.

How We Rank DEXs

Rankings on DefiTracker are based on verified on-chain data. We track 24-hour and 7-day trading volumes across all supported chains by indexing smart contract events directly from each blockchain. Volume data is never self-reported by exchanges.

Key methodology details:

  • Wash trading detection: transactions between related wallets are flagged and excluded from volume calculations.
  • Multi-chain aggregation: for protocols deployed on multiple chains (e.g., Uniswap on 47 chains), volumes are summed across all deployments.
  • Protocol vs. fork distinction: forks are listed separately unless they maintain the same governance and codebase.

Key Metrics Explained

  • 24h Volume -- Total value of all swaps executed in the last 24 hours, in USD.
  • TVL (Total Value Locked) -- The total value of assets deposited in the protocol's smart contracts, available as liquidity for trades.
  • Market Share -- The protocol's 24h volume as a percentage of total DEX volume across all tracked protocols.
  • Pairs -- The number of unique trading pairs available on the exchange.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is the best DEX for beginners?
For beginners on Ethereum and EVM chains, 1inch is recommended because it automatically finds the best price across hundreds of liquidity sources. You don't need to know which specific DEX has the best liquidity for your pair -- 1inch handles routing automatically. For Solana users, Jupiter serves the same aggregation role. Both support gasless swaps (no ETH/SOL needed for transaction fees).
How do DEX fees compare to centralized exchanges?
Most AMM DEXs charge 0.01-1% per swap depending on the pool's fee tier (Uniswap V3 offers 0.01%, 0.05%, 0.3%, and 1% tiers). On top of swap fees, you pay blockchain gas fees (network transaction costs). On Ethereum mainnet, gas can be $2-20 per swap. On L2s like Arbitrum, Base, or Optimism, gas is typically $0.01-0.10. Centralized exchanges charge 0.1-0.5% maker/taker fees but no gas fees. For large trades ($10K+), DEX aggregators often provide better total cost despite gas, due to reduced slippage.
Is it safe to use decentralized exchanges?
DEXs eliminate counterparty risk -- you never deposit funds with an intermediary, so there's no risk of exchange hacks or insolvency (as seen with FTX, Mt. Gox). However, DEXs carry smart contract risk: bugs in the protocol's code could potentially lead to fund loss. Major DEXs like Uniswap, Curve, and 1inch have undergone extensive security audits and have been battle-tested with billions in volume. Always verify you're on the correct website URL and be cautious of phishing sites that impersonate legitimate DEXs.
What is a DEX aggregator and why should I use one?
A DEX aggregator searches across multiple decentralized exchanges simultaneously to find the best swap rate for your trade. Instead of manually checking Uniswap, Curve, Balancer, and SushiSwap, an aggregator like 1inch does this automatically and can even split a single trade across multiple DEXs for better execution. For trades above $500, aggregators typically save 0.1-0.5% compared to using any single DEX directly.
What chains are supported?
DefiTracker indexes DEX activity across 82 blockchains including Ethereum, Solana, BNB Chain (BSC), Arbitrum, Base, Optimism, Polygon, Avalanche, Sonic, Gnosis, Fantom, Sui, Aptos, and many more. The most DEX activity by volume occurs on Ethereum mainnet, followed by Solana, BSC, and Arbitrum. L2 networks like Base and Optimism are growing rapidly due to lower transaction fees.

About DefiTracker

DefiTracker is an independent analytics platform focused on decentralized exchange data. We index on-chain swap events across 82 blockchains to provide accurate, real-time volume rankings for over 740 DEX protocols.

Our Mission

The DeFi space lacks reliable, unbiased exchange data. Most existing trackers rely on self-reported volume numbers from projects, which are easily inflated. DefiTracker sources all volume data directly from blockchain events, providing verifiable metrics that anyone can audit.

Data Sources

We run our own blockchain indexers for all major EVM chains and integrate with third-party indexing services for non-EVM chains (Solana, Sui, Aptos). Our wash trading detection pipeline flags and excludes suspicious trading patterns, including circular trades between related wallets and trades designed solely to inflate volume metrics.

Revenue Model

DefiTracker earns revenue through referral commissions from partner exchanges. When you click a "Trade" or "Trade Now" link and complete a swap, we may receive a small commission from the exchange. This revenue model allows us to provide our data and analytics for free. Referral partnerships never influence our rankings, which are determined solely by on-chain volume data.

Ranking Methodology

Our rankings are designed to give traders an accurate, manipulation-resistant view of DEX activity. This page details how we collect, process, and present data.

Data Collection

We index Swap, Trade, and OrderFilled events directly from DEX smart contracts on each supported chain. For AMMs like Uniswap, we track pool-level swap events. For aggregators like 1inch, we track the final settlement events rather than intermediate routing, to avoid double-counting.

Volume Calculation

All volumes are denominated in USD using price feeds from multiple oracle sources (Chainlink, Pyth, CoinGecko). We use the spot price at the time of each swap for conversion. Volumes are aggregated across all deployments of each protocol -- for example, Uniswap's total volume includes Ethereum mainnet, Arbitrum, Base, Polygon, and all other supported chains.

Wash Trading Detection

Our pipeline identifies and excludes suspected wash trading using multiple signals:

Aggregator vs. DEX Volume

Aggregators like 1inch and Jupiter route trades through underlying DEXs. To avoid double-counting, we attribute volume to the aggregator when listing aggregators, and to the underlying DEX when listing spot DEXs. The "Spot DEXs" tab shows venue-level volume; the "DEX Aggregators" tab shows aggregator-routed volume.

Update Frequency

Rankings update every 60 seconds for major chains (Ethereum, Solana, BSC, Arbitrum, Base, Optimism, Polygon). Lower-volume chains update every 5 minutes. Historical data (7d, 30d) recalculates hourly.
